Unexpected Royalty

“Unexpected intrusions of beauty. This is what life is.”
― Saul Bellow

Of all places I go, I would never have expected to see a Queen butterfly (Danaus gilippus) enjoying the nectar of Gregg’s Mistflowers (Conoclinium greggii) near the entrance of a grocery store. It was utterly oblivious to passers-by and even allowed me to come close with my Samsung S23 cell phone to capture these shots. This large Texas chain grocery store has one of the best backyard plant selections. I suppose they can advertise now that Mother Nature endorses it.

Both photos were shot in RAW and edited in Lightroom and Luminar Neo.

That is the story behind the shots. If you liked this post, you may also be interested in others featuring Cellpic Sunday, Greggs mistflower, Queen butterfly, Round Rock, Texas, Wildflowers, and Wildlife. Until the next time, keep clicking and capturing the beauty your eyes find.

I suspect I know which grocery chain provided the opportunity. HEB paired with the Native Plant Society of Texas to offer a collection of native plants in their stores. The selection here was good, although I didn’t see any Gregg’s mistflower, or any butterfly.

That was a match made in heaven. I’d heard that HEB plants do better than those purchased in other stores. Now I know why.

Thanks, John. It was meant to happen. I seldom use that route to get in the store.
