Remembering Cee Neuner

Clematis texensis

The Scarlet leather flower (Clematis texensis) is endemic to Texas. More specifically, it is endemic to the Edwards Plateau region in Central Texas. It thrives in rocky, limestone-rich soils, which we have plenty of in this area. It prefers full sun to part shade and is drought-tolerant and deer-resistant. Its scarlet, bell-shaped flowers have thick, leather-like petals and attract pollinators such as hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies. Although it blooms typically from March through July, I captured this photo at the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge’s Doeskin Ranch on September 17, 2025. The torrential rains and flooding that occurred in early July likely contributed to the late blooms appearing in September.

Cee Neuner would have been sixty-four years old today. She passed away in March 2025. Although I never met her, we shared a passion for flowers. I often contributed to her FOTD (Flower of the Day) challenges whenever possible. Thanks to Marsha Ingrao and Dan Antion for spearheading this tribute on their blogs. Happy birthday to Cee, Marsha, and Dan.

That is the story behind the shot. If you liked this post, you may also be interested in others featuring Balcones Canyonlands NWR, Doeskin Ranch, FOTD, Texas, and Wildflowers. Until the next time, keep clicking and capturing the beauty your eyes find.

I love those flowers. I had never heard of them. I love how delicate and colorful they are. They remind me of fuchsias. Thank you for sharing with us in honor of Cee.

Thanks for writing, Marsha. One reason you might have never heard of those flowers is because they only exist in this part of Texas, the Edwards Plateau.
