Magenta Skies and a Double Rainbow

A double rainbow arches over the rooftops and treetops of a residential neighborhood at dusk. The sky transitions from deep blue-purple on the left to vivid orange and magenta on the right. Both the primary and secondary rainbow arcs are clearly visible. Photographed in the Gardens of Teravista, Round Rock, Texas, on May 21, 2026.
Double Arc Over Teravista

Two days ago, after a series of thunderstorms rolled through our area in Round Rock, the sky outside our living room window began to glow in a way that stopped us in our tracks. It was just past 8:20 in the evening, and something in that light told us to go outside.

We were not disappointed. The entire sky had transformed into a living canvas of deep orange and magenta — colors so vivid they made our neighborhood in the Gardens of Teravista feel like a different world. And stretching overhead, from one end of the horizon to the other, was a full rainbow, its arc enveloping the entire scene.

What made it truly remarkable was how the colors shifted as we followed the arc with our eyes. On the left, the sky held a deep, cool blue. Then, gradually, it gave way to layers of orange, pink, and magenta, all bleeding into one another in the most spectacular way. And if you looked carefully — just above and outside the primary arc — there was a second rainbow, softer and more diffuse, like an echo of the first.

A full rainbow spans the entire width of the frame over a neighborhood at dusk, the sky inside the arc glowing a deep pink and magenta while the outer sky fades to blue. A single bird is visible in flight near the center of the frame. Houses and trees line the bottom of the image. Photographed in the Gardens of Teravista, Round Rock, Texas, on May 21, 2026.
One Bird, One Sky

I reached for my Samsung S23 and did my best to capture what was in front of us. A few basic adjustments in Lightroom helped bring out the colors the way my eye actually saw them. I also shot a short video, because a still image alone could not quite do justice to the sweep and scale of it all.

Moments like this remind me how much beauty is right outside the door — if we only take the time to look.
