You cannot miss these scarlet hibiscus flowers as you enter the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. There is a large bush right by the well in the center of the entrance, next to the restrooms and gift shop. The Halberd-leaf Rosemallow (Hibiscus laevis) is also known as Scarlet Rose Mallow. It is easy to see why one of its common names includes the word “scarlet.” The bush can grow to about 6 feet tall, with blossoms about 3 inches long. In addition to white, you can also find these flowers in pink. However, the white blossoms with maroon centers are the most striking. One interesting aspect of these flowers, I learned, is that they are open during the day and close tightly at night. This perennial bush is a pollinator favorite and is also heat-tolerant.
That is the story behind the shots. If you liked this post, you may also be interested in others featuring Austin, FlowerHour, Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, Texas, and Wildflowers. Until the next time, keep clicking and capturing the beauty your eyes find.

These large flowers are indeed photogenic. You won’t be surprised that on a couple of visits to the Wildflower Center I photographed the very same one you singled out in this post.

What a wonderful flower, Egidio, with an interesting name! The white and scarlet look so dramatic together.

Thanks, Terri. Yes, that scarlet hue is very deep and contrasts well with the white petals.
