Five Beacons on Lisbon Streets

Estação do Rossio

Wandering around Lisbon’s city streets is a joy at any time of day. The city comes alive everywhere you look. Here are five places not very far from one another.

I opened with the Rossio Station (Estação do Rossio). The architecture is a big draw for tourists, who also take advantage of public transportation services there. The place is transformed at night. Just around the square to the right of the station, you find the National Theatre. In the photo below, you can see the station in the background.

Let’s look more closely at some of the lamp posts. Going down Liberty Avenue (Avenida da Liberdade), one reaches Augusta Street (Rua Augusta). Stores and restaurants line up this busy commerce area in Lisbon.

When you reach the end of the street, you will be in the large Commerce Plaza (Praça do Comércio) overlooking the Tagus River (Rio Tejo).

In closing, visiting Lisbon is incomplete without exploring St. George’s Castle (Castelo de São Jorge) and its neighborhood. Here is a look at one of the street lights in that area.

That is the story behind the shots. If you liked this post, you might also be interested in others featuring Cityscapes, Lisbon, Monochrome, Monochrome Madness, and Portugal. Until the next time, keep clicking and capturing the beauty your eyes find.

Very atmospheric night shots 🙂 I’m thinking now that I should have checked my Lisbon archives for streetlight photos, although to be honest I had more than enough without them!

I cut back on the number of photos. I had several I had selected first, but cut back to just Lisbon — and still reduced the number of photos. Thanks for the feedback.

Lovely shots, Egidio! I have been to Lisbon once and loved it. Wonder when can I go again. Do you know the story behind the horseshoe shaped doors of the station? It is a reference to the horse of King Sebastian who will bring him back when the time is right, or something like that. My trip-memories are penned here, if you’d like to read – https://reflectionsontheriver.wordpress.com/tag/Lisbon/?orderby=date&order=asc

Lovely. Nothing like monochrome for photos of street lamps

Thanks, I.J. I agree that monochrome brings out forms and details better.

These are very atmospheric images Egidio. I’ve heard many good things about Lisbon and Portugal, but have never been there.

Brad, we spent 29 days in Portugal and traveled all over. Lisbon was one of our favorite cities. Thanks for your feedback.

We are on the fence. With all the plane issues and return troubles some citizens face coming back to the US, we have been considering staying put and maybe travel in the US only.

Thank you, Anne. I did not know I had taken so many shots of street lamps while in Portugal.
