Duranta erecta

Skyflower (Duranta erecta)

A simple stop at an ice cream shop in Port Aransas, Texas, led me to discover this beautiful flowering shrub. The shop owners had no idea what this shrub was called, but a quick online search provided me with the answer I needed.

From Wikipedia: Duranta erecta is a species of flowering shrub in the verbena family Verbenaceae, native from Mexico to South America and the Caribbean. It is widely cultivated as an ornamental plant in tropical and subtropical gardens throughout the world, and has become naturalized in many places. Common names include golden dewdrop, pigeon berry, and skyflower.

One of its many names is Skyflower. There are some 30 species and varieties of Duranta erecta in the American tropics. The shrub can reach 10-15 feet (3.0-4.5 m) tall and over 5 feet (1.5 m) wide. It blooms from spring until the first frost and is also drought-resistant. It might also even survive winters in Central Texas. Its vibrant color caught my eye right away.

That is the story behind the shot. If you liked this post, you may also be interested in others featuring the FlowerHour, Port Aransas, Texas, and Wildflowers. Until the next time, keep clicking and capturing the beauty your eyes find.

These grow like crazy down here. I gave one to a friend as a birthday gift, and in a couple of years it’s quadrupled in size. I suspect the name ‘golden dewdrop’ is a result of its pretty yellow-gold fruits. Late in the season, the fruits and flowers often appear together, and the effect is charming.

You are so lucky! I’d love to see more of this around here. I’m not even sure it’d do well in Austin. The flowers are so beautiful. I’ve only seen them in Port A.

I’m happy you liked it, Terri. As for growing it here, hmm, I’m not sure given my track record. 🙂
