Bold Eyebrows

Feisty

The Travis Audubon Society has just named the Carolina Wren (Thryothorus ludovicianus) its 2026 Bird of the Year. This small and mighty backyard bird, weighing barely as much as two small, empty soda cans, shows a rich cinnamon plumage. Its white eyebrow stripe is a major identifying characteristic of this wren.

The tail can indicate a Carolina Wren’s mood. When it is upward, as in the image above, it only means they are hopping around. On the other hand, if the tail is low or fanned out, it might indicate defensive behavior.

Their nesting habits can be a little messy. They can use old boots, hanging flower baskets, or even an empty coffee can. Their signature call is often interpreted as “cheeseburger, cheeseburger, cheeseburger,” when you say it really fast. Carolina Wrens are ground foragers and mainly eat insects.

I captured these images at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, Lake Bastrop South Shore, and at home.

That is the story behind the shots. If you liked this post, you may also be interested in others featuring Bird of the Week, Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, Lake Bastrop South Shore, Teravista, Texas, and Wildlife. Until the next time, keep clicking and capturing the beauty your eyes find.

Wren in italiano si dice: scricciolo, una parola difficile da pronunciare. Il tuo scricciolo è bellissimo!

A lovely bird, with that cinnamon and brown colour. Certainly a striking supercilium, quite noticeable.
