Through a Monochrome Lens: Windows into Big Bend

Chimneys Trail

For this week’s Monochrome Madness, the theme was set to Windows. The theme was set by Dawn (from The Day After). The window you see above is a natural window found in the Chimneys Trail at Big Bend National Park in Texas. Even though this is a relatively easy trail to hike, it is only recommended you do it in cooler weather. We particularly enjoy hiking it in the winter when temperatures in the desert may reach a high of only 70ºF (21ºC). The trail is completely open and has no shade. In the 4.5-mile (7.25-km) roundtrip hike, you have expansive views of the Chihuahuan Desert and the Chisos Mountains until you reach this area with the window and some native American rock art. For more photos of this area, please see this post.

For a more traditional window view, nothing in Big Bend National Park will compare to the views a visitor has when visiting Mariscal Mine. This is a favorite destination for us because it is more remote. A high-clearance vehicle with all-wheel drive is recommended. Again, this is a desert drive. In addition to seeing the Chisos Mountains, you will also see Sierra del Carmen in Mexico, as in this photo. You can see more of that in this post.

Mariscal Mine

I hope you have enjoyed these two monochromes. As always, feel free to send any feedback you may have.
