Stealth

Blue Dasher (Pachydiplax longipennis) dragonflies are wonderful odonates that keep me busy whenever I see one. Although the species name longipennis (meaning “long wings”), their wings are not substantially longer than those of related species. The photos I feature in this post are likely a male Blue Dasher; they are vibrant blue with yellow-striped thorax.

This Blue Dasher was weaving in and out of some aquatic plants in a pond during a macro workshop I attended with friends. I am especially fond of the photo above because of its background. I was positioned at the right place to get the dragonfly against the blue waters. Although the dragonfly quickly glided with uncanny precision, I got my camera to remain focused on it. These dragonflies were the most challenging subjects to photograph for me that day.⁣ However, I cannot deny the fun I had at that workshop.

Finally, a moment of rest. When a dragonfly lands somewhere, it is always easier to capture an image. Even if they fly away, they return to the same spot repeatedly.

That is the story behind the shots. If you liked these photos, you might also be interested in other posts featuring Blue Dasher, Dragonfly, Texas, and Wildlife. Until the next time, keep clicking and capturing the beauty your eyes find.

Thanks, Sarah. Digital cameras are blessing. So many shots were blurry or just caught the water… LOL

Excellent Egidio! It’s almost like he stopped in flight just to pose for you. He is so sharp and clear. Great in-flight capture.

Thank you, Anne. As I said in another reply, digital cameras are wonderful. We can shoot dozens of images to get a really good one.

Wow, you certainly learnt a trick or two in that workshop!

The main takeaway from the workshop was that it is very hard to photograph those insects in flight. Thanks for your comment, as always.
