Davis Mountains State Park in West Texas is one of my favorite state parks. Something about the area moves me. The views are breathtaking, and the open spaces are wider than anywhere else in Texas. The skyline’s vast openness is a significant attraction. Whenever I drive to that area, I often visit Skyline Drive. At sunset, the view is spectacular.
In the opening photo, you can see an otherworldly view of the surrounding area in the Davis Mountains. Almost dead center in the photo, you can see a pyramid-like mountain rising above the other mountains. That mountain is Mitre Peak, which is 6,190 feet (1,886.7 meters) high. You have a closer view in the next monochrome image.
Mitre Peak is named for its resemblance to the peaked hat worn by bishops. Geologists refer to this formation as a monadnock or inselberg. The peak is a volcanic intrusion that never reached the earth’s surface.

We have a Skyline Drive here in Virginia in the Shenandoah National Park. It’s a much different view, though, our highest elevation is just a little over 4,000 feet. It is a beautiful park, as is yours.

It‘s always funny to find German words adopted by other languages. In this case ‚Inselberg‘ (although it’s a combined word which is built from Insel (island) and Berg (mountain))
