Signs of Our Times

Resisting

This is a very different post. It is not about nature or any other topic I usually photograph. It is also unusual because of the large number of photos I’ll share. I’ll let the images speak for themselves.

On February 5, 2025, my husband and I attended one of two protests as part of the 50 protests in 50 states in 1 day. This was on the steps of the State of Texas Capitol. The protest’s primary goal was a demonstration against Trump’s second administration policies and actions in his first two weeks in office. All 50 states participated. Instead of photographing the crowd, I focused on the signs telling the stories about people’s anger and dissatisfaction.

There was a heavy presence of Capitol police and other law-enforcing agencies in the area. With this country’s history of mass shootings, we were concerned about outbursts of violence. Luckily, everything was peaceful.

A Citizen’s Right to Peaceful Demonstrations

The signs covered everything in people’s minds. From Abbott to Trump and Cornyn to Musk, everyone creating chaos appeared in the signs. I caution you that some of the language may be graphic.

It is comforting for Canadians to see that not all Americans agree with how Trump and his type are running America. Wishing you the best for the next four years and hopefully better in the years to come.

Good on you for attending the protest. We heard about the 50501 protests after they happened. I’m not well-plugged in to these things, but I’m trying to do my part by calling and writing my reps (such as they are … Florida and Texas vying for which can be the most fascist state). I’ve been thinking about faith a lot lately, mainly because of Jimmy Carter. I’m not a religious person, but I did feel my faith in humanity shatter when the Orange Felon was more or less elected. But these photos you share help me to regain some of the faith I thought I had lost. There are more of us who believe that immigrants not only built this country but also keep it thriving. There are more of us who believe in compassion and kindness and mercy. I don’t know how or when but I believe we will prevail. Thank you for sharing these photos. Egídio.

Marie, first of all, thanks for your support and comforting feedback. You mentioned such keywords in your note, e.g., compassion and kindness. The Orange Felon and his maggots are causing a lot of damage and sending this country back to the Dark Ages. Thank you for writing and resisting.

Way to go Egidio! The world needs to know that all America voted for or want Trump.

Thank you, Anne. It’s a small grain of sand in this humongous mess we’re in. It was helpful to put this post together and look at those photos again.

I can hear the toilet flush and the gurgle of the USA going into the sewer from here.

I know, Brian. It’s a lot of sh** this administration is doing. I don’t know what will be left of the country in four years. It’s only been three weeks, and it feels like years.

Such a discouraging time to be living in this country. And living close to Washington, DC makes it worse because many of my neighbors work for a variety of government agencies. Living in Texas must be even more stressful with the state politics. I keep hoping sanity will prevail but I become less hopeful everyday. Thanks for attending the protest.

Marie, it’s very troubling times indeed. Texas politics is bad, too. Thank you for your support and comforting words.

We have been watching what is happening there very closely and feel for you guys. It is really horrible what we are seeing and now we have a political leader that seems to think he could do the same here. I really hope not. Please take care and remember Trump wanted the army to shoot the protestors during the BLM protests. That man doesn’t care about anyone but himself.

Thank you, Leanne, for your support and encouragement. Trump is setting a bad example for the rest of the world. Others will think they can do the same.

Ci aspettano tempi difficili, caro Egidio. L’America sta diventando una oligarchia…

Whoever expected that the fear of fascism would rear its head in our lifetimes? It’s comforting to know that many are resisting. But is resistance enough in the face of megalomania? I accidentally first typed magalomania. Perhaps I should have left it there.

Maga is very dangerous. Like you, I also thought we had learned from previous mistakes. Trump and his allies want to repeat history. Thank you for writing.

Thank you for attending the protest and for posting your photos. This country has weathered other stupidity and made it through. There is a boycott on buying anything on February 28, and to boycott Amazon purchasing for the week of March 7-14. I plan to honor those.

Thank you, Lindy, for these supportive words. Thanks also for the tip about the Amazon boycott. I knew about the one on Feb. 28.

I'd love hearing back from you. Let me know if you have any questions or something is not working on the site.
