Pretty in Pink: Giant Spiderwort

Giant Spiderwort (Tradescantia gigantea) is a perennial flower in Louisiana and Texas. This three-petal flower blooms in white, pink, blue, purple, or violet. The colors indicate the acidity of the soil in which they grow. The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center says, “acidic soils produce bluer flowers, while more alkaline soils create varying shades of pink and purple.”

They get the giant denomination because they can grow up to three feet (0.9 m) tall. The flowers often appear in clusters and have long leaves. They thrive in sunny and partially shaded areas. They were named after John Tradescant (1608-1662), a gardener for King Charles I of England.

I photographed these flowers at Copperfield Nature Trail. That is the story behind the shots.
