Pompeii

— When we traveled to Italy in 2012, one of the destinations we knew we wanted to visit was Pompeii. Its historical importance was simply a must for us. So, we traveled to Naples one morning and proceeded to Pompeii for a day visit. The constant view of Vesuvius and the city’s preservation were astonishing. Walking down city streets was a step back in time. Pompeii was buried under 13-20 ft (4-6 m) of volcanic ashes in the year AD 79. A modern-day visitor can still see how the city stopped its normal routine under such a catastrophic occurrence. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and should be on anyone’s list of places to see when in Italy.
