La Libertad

Going back several years ago, one of our most memorable trips was visiting El Salvador in 2008. One of our closest friends, a native of that country, prepared the entire itinerary and led us to an unforgettable visit. After spending a few days in the capital sightseeing, we drove to the coast to spend a few days there. Our destination was La Libertad.

The short trip to the coast was approximately 45 minutes. As with other parts of the country, the beauty before our eyes was wonderful. A lush countryside was around every curve. When we got to the beach, it was yet another surprise. Growing up in Fortaleza, on Brazil‘s northeast coast, I was used to white sandy beaches. Was I in for a surprise!

La Libertad area is volcanic in origin. The beaches are nearly covered with black rocks and dark sand, as seen in the photos above. I found the shores very alluring but challenging to walk on.

Another thing you will notice when you are there is many surfers. The El Sunzal beach waves are world-famous among surfers. We spent several hours sitting in our hotel bar watching the action.

A trip around the area also leads to more beautiful spots, such as the boardwalk near the restaurant where we stopped for lunch one day. The opening image and the one below were taken from the restaurant’s outdoor sitting area.

El Salvador has had a history of turmoil and gang violence. We were lucky everything was peaceful and safe the year we visited the country.

Oh my goodness, such dramatic shots. There’s something quite unsettling about black sand, don’t you think? Thanks for this stimulating trip.

What a beautiful coastline Egidio, and amazing pictures capturing it. My favorite is the one with the water spout. Was that manmade? Looks like it.

Anne, thank you for the compliment. I’ve seen water spouts before and cannot say for sure that was entire manmade. The walls around it make me think there were men’s hands involved in the water spout.

I remember seeing black sand in New Zealand, it is very strange. Looks like a fantastic place for photos. I love the one of the waves crashing.

I'd love hearing back from you. Let me know if you have any questions or something is not working on the site.
