We had the first freeze of the season this week. Although it barely got below the freezing mark, it was enough to notice plenty of frost and ice in areas without much sunlight. Enough ice was in one shallow section of the pond behind our backyard, keeping the water still. Also, more noticeably, one of the bird baths had a thin sheet of ice. I choose that bird bath for the latest ICM Photo Challenge, ICMPC #12.
In the first photo above, I used a slow shutter speed of 1/15 seconds and a controlled vertical motion of the camera. The backyard fence bars appear in focus because of the camera’s vertical motion. I liked the contrast of the bars and softness in the bird bath.
For this image, the camera settings were the same, but the motion was more abrupt and horizontal, creating an illusion of currents or moving water. The ice pieces in the water added more texture to the image.
To conclude, here is the subject without motion. I positioned the camera low on the edge of the birdbath. Do not be fooled by the birdbath size. The water basin is only 1 ft (31 cm) in diameter.
That is the story behind the shots. If you liked these photos, you might also be interested in other posts featuring Abstracts, ICM, ICMPC, Teravista, and Texas. Until the next time, keep clicking and capturing the beauty your eyes find.

Nice ICMs on the bird bath Egidio. All I could think of was those poor birds, the water looks so cold!

Anne, I thought the same. I broke the thin ice and added more water. This coming week will be another cold one. It will actually be colder and likely bring some wintry precipitation. Thanks for your comments.

The title of this is perfect for such a surreal feeling of the water. I like that I am able to see a bit of the background in focus as we look at the motion of the waters. Very nice 🙂
