In Our Backyard

A Splash of Color

The photo above is a Pipevine Swallowtail (Battus philenor) butterfly, also called Blue Swallowtail. It is found in North and Central America. I had to try countless times to get pictures of this butterfly, but they move so quickly that it is almost impossible to get a good shot. Previously, I got one on a lantana bush we used to have in our old home’s backyard. This time, however, I made this photo of one of those butterflies on Flame Acanthus (Anisacanthus quadrifidus var. wrightii). The contrast of colors was striking to my eyes. However, looking closely, you’ll see what I mean by their moving quickly. Its left wing was still moving when I got this photo.

That is the story behind the shot. If you liked this photo, you might also be interested in other posts featuring AustinButterflyFlame AcanthusFOTDPipevine swallowtailTexas Wildflowers, and Wildlife. Until the next time, keep clicking and capturing the beauty your eyes find.

Beautiful butterfly. With that vivid blue wing, you could hardly miss it.

I know what you mean about photographing butterflies or any other flying insect for that matter. It’s not easy. Another photographer and I spent 2-3 hours trying to get dragonflies in focus. In the end we concluded it was a skill we had yet to learn or they stopped every few flying journeys for a rest and we just had to wait for that moment.

Thanks, Vicki. I hear your pain about photographing dragonflies. I’ve lucked out a couple of times, but I don’t push my luck much.

  3. What a stunning capture, Egidio!
The contrast of colors must be breathtaking in person.
Even with that slight wing blur, you managed to freeze a moment of nature’s brilliance—proof that persistence pays off in the most beautiful ways.👍👍👍

Thanks, Cara. That was the backyard in our old home. We planned it as a pollinator garden with native plants.

I'd love hearing back from you. Let me know if you have any questions or something is not working on the site.
