Darkness

Goat Mountain

You can find many social media sights focusing on famous landmarks in Big Bend National Park. I have several here in Through Brazilian Eyes. After all, Big Bend is one of my favorite national parks in this country. Although I am not in the mood to do much right now, photography is an excellent coping mechanism for the election results from a couple of days ago. I can see beauty in the world around me.

“In order for the light to shine so brightly,
the darkness must be present.”
Francis Bacon

Why such a negative mood? I know people who may lose health insurance if the Affordable Care Act (ACA or Obamacare) disappears. I am married, but just like many others in a same-sex marriage, mine could be eliminated. Particularly for people in the United States, if you don’t understand why your “gay friends” are scared right now, then you don’t have gay friends. You only know a gay person.

The mountain image depicts what many of us are feeling after your election results. Sombre, worried and totally baffled about how anyone who gets in power and should be jailed (in my opinion) wins a national election. I feel as though a dark cloud has descended upon both the western world and many others that T supports. How many millions did T spend paying supporters and voters?

Many of us in Australia, (certainly my small circle of friends in particular), are with you in your concern.

Here in Europe, may of us are depressed and scared by your election result. But I can see how very much greater the impact is on American citizens. Especially those, who like you, don’t conform to some virtually non-existent ‘ideal’. The rise of the Hard Right worldwide is worrying. Sending supportive vibes your way!

Thank you, a million thanks for your support. This election has world impact. In the news, they were reporting how Putin was excited about creating a new world order. Well, that is not good. I need to stay positive and continue doing my part. Thanks again, Margaret.

I’m really feeling for you and all my American friends, gay AND straight. In addition to the issues you mention there is the worrying trend towards division and I wonder where that will lead? And it’s not only bad for the US, it’s bad for the rest of us! It’s a worrying time for your country in particular of course, but there will also be impacts worldwide from this result. I don’t expect Americans to vote with anything other than the good of their own country in mind, or course, but I can’t see how this will help anyone other than a small, rich, minority 🙁

Thank you for your supportive words, Sarah. I appreciate that. I guess we will have to wait and see what happens now. If the House gets a Republican majority, then it’ll be a full Republican presidency with the Senate (already with a Republican majority), the Supreme Court, and the President. That’s not very representative of the country as a whole.

Thank you for sharing your heart, light, and feelings Egidio. It is hard to understand why so many people are taken in by his lies. I’m feel sad and gutted by the election, but live a fairly simple and sheltered life. I’m sorry that this has put you and so many others at risk. 🙏

Brad, thank you so much for listening and letting me vent a little. Photography is a wonderful means of coping with this.

I can imagine the anxiety! What should be worrying is that the majority of the people of the nation must have the same thoughts and beliefs, as the one they have elected..One time can be a fluke but twice hints at something more serious at play. But, let’s keep the faith and get to the light at the end of the tunnel!

PR, you touched on a very important: the first time could be ignorance, but the second time meant people wanted what he was sayiing. Thank you for the support and positive words.

Egidio, I wanted to weep with your words. I keep reassuring myself that my husband and I will be okay but it’s everyone else I worry about. Our neighbors across the street are a married same-sex couple. I haven’t spoken with them since the election, but I’m sure they are worried … scared. It’s difficult not to imagine the worst since the Orange One was always threatening the worst. While just over half of voters voted against democracy, I take comfort in knowing that 69.1 million (at last count) voted for democracy. He did not “win” by a landslide. He does not have a mandate. It will be a long, hard fight, but we can’t give up. Meanwhile, keep posting your beautiful photographs and looking for the beauty that is still there.

Marie, it was not my intention to make you feel like weeping. I’m one that always look at the positive side of things. Although there is not much positive to hold on to right now, I’m not in despair. It’s very disappointing, but I already see a lot of pushback regarding some policies, e.g., the mass deportation. You make an excellent point about this not being a mandate. Thank you for closing with those positive words and for your encouragement.

No worries, Egidio. Sometimes weeping is comforting. My husband encourages me to cry when I fight back tears, reminding me that I always feel better afterward 🙂 We will stay strong … at least for those we love.

It’s been a shocking week. I worry about all the people that this vote has put in jeopardy; women, the LGBTQIA community, and my non-binary child. I stand with you. Love is love.
