Crepe Myrtle

Crepe Myrtle

Whenever the weather gets too hot in Texas, there is not much one can do but stay indoors or near air conditioning. In some years, we get milder and wetter conditions. When that happens, there is a lot of green in the city.

Crepe myrtle

Crepe Myrtle (Lagerstroemia) is an excellent plant for our climate. These deciduous and evergreen trees are very heat and cold-tolerant and bloom throughout the summer and fall. You can see varieties of red, white, and purple in the Austin area. Depending on the amount of sunlight, these trees can grow and bloom quite a bit, reaching heights up to 100 ft (30 m). Looking closely at the flowers, you can see why the tree’s name is crepe myrtle. The flowers appear to have a crinkled nature and crêpe-like texture to their petals. In these three shots, I wanted to pay particular attention to the flower centers and how intricate they are.

The centre of this flower are so interesting and quite detailed.

When I photographed the pink Crepe Myrtle here in Melbourne I never noticed the centres. Thanks for sharing Egideio. 🙂
