Very few views in West Texas can compare to what a visitor sees upon entering Big Bend NP. Whatever entrance one uses to get to the park, the Chisos Mountains will dominate the scenery.
The Chisos Mountains are an island in the Chihuahuan Desert. It is the only mountain range in the entire USA that’s completely contained within a single park. It is also the southernmost mountain range on the mainland of the USA. Erosion carved these impressive peaks from sedimentary rock. Beneath the surface lies remnants of ancient volcanic activity. These geologic beauties contribute to the Chisos‘ unique shapes. As for the range name, “Chisos” is a bit of a mystery. Among the various possible explanations, there is the Native American word meaning “ghost” or “spirit.” Also, because of its proximity to Mexico, others suggest the name comes from the Spanish word “hechizos” meaning “enchantment.” I would say both of those possible origins relate to the Chisos’ spirit of enchantment.
