June 20, 2024, marks the Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. I wanted to celebrate the date with this sunset photo I captured at Brushy Creek Lake. This is one of my favorite biking trails in Austin. The lake is located along the Brushy Creek Regional Trail. Depending on the side trails you use off the main trail, you can ride, hike, or walk over 18 miles (29 km) of pavement, gravel, and dirt trails. I like to park at Brushy Creek Lake, about the halfway point between the two ends of the trail. The pink flowers in the photo above are known as Horsemint or Lemon Beebalm.
The Summer Solstice is the astronomical start to summer. It is also the longest day of the year. Accuweather says this is the first time in 228 years that the Solstice happened this early. The last time it occurred on June 20 was in 1796. You can visit the Farmer’s Almanac for more information about the Summer Solstice.
