— Patron Saint of Social Justice, San Martín de Porres has his remains in the chapel bearing his name in the Convent of Santo Domingo in Lima, Peru, where he was born in 1579. He was the illegitimate son of a black Panamanian woman and a Spanish nobleman. He was abandoned by his father and lived in poverty with his mother and sister. He was a lay brother of the Dominican Order (joined it at age 15) and died in 1639. Pope John XXIII canonized San Martín in 1962. In addition to San Martín, the convent is also the final resting place for San Juan Macías and Santa Rosa de Lima. The Basilica and Convent of Santo Domingo is also known as the Convent of the Holy Rosary. Located in the historic center of Lima, this is the oldest religious complex of Peru’s capital with its construction dating back to when Lima was founded. Several renovations have taken place after the building was destroyed during the great earthquake of 1678.
