— After seeing so many photos from this scenic park, I finally had a chance to spend some time hiking at Chalk Ridge Falls Park. Located just outside Belton, Texas, about an hour from Austin, the park offers a great hiking trail along the Lampasas River. The park is east of the Stillhouse Hollow Lake in Belton, Texas. If you wander around the trail, you should be able to do from 4-5 miles (6.5-8.0 km) out and back, depending on how far you choose to hike. I pretty much got to what appeared to be the end of the trail and clocked only a 4-mile (6.5 km) round trip.
Chalk Ridge Falls are the main feature of this park. The falls are not high, but they are fairly wide. Also the various layers seen in the falls offer an added attraction here. On this particular day I was there, the Lampasas River was running nicely and appeared to have a lot of water. However, someone I encountered along the trail told me that the water volume that day was low. I was pleased with what I saw and can only imagine what the falls would look like with more water. The last photo in this series shows the falls from its top section.
The trails around the park are heavily shaded and for the most part not challenging at all. You can hike along the river and, at times, get to the water. There are several beautiful locations in the park along this trail. I will definitely be back and explore more of Chalk Ridge Falls Park.
