Capturing the Music, One Shade at a Time

Austin City Limits

There are photos one captures and never thinks they will see the light of day. That is the case with the images I feature this week for Leanne’s Monochrome Madness #22: Music. The challenge is hosted by Margaret’s creative mind of From Pyrenees to Pennines.

Those who follow me for a while are familiar with my affinity for music and photography. Choosing the photos I would include here was pretty easy. The hard part was trimming down the post to a few photos.

The featured image comes from the renowned Austin City Limits theatre. We have attended many concerts there. One finds the wall I photographed above on the theatre’s second floor. It is interesting to note the monochrome color is the actual monochrome palette. I did not have to convert the original image.

Willie Nelson

Willie Nelson is the artist who has performed the most concerts at Austin City Limits, as seen in the first photo. Although I have attended one of his New Year’s Eve concerts there, the image you see here was from a live performance he did on the steps of the Texas State Capitol. The demonstration was for voting rights. This photo was originally in color.

Here is another image that needed no monochrome conversion. It is also another image that I never thought I would publish.

Keys

I will close with an iconic Bossa Nova tune written by Antonio Carlos Jobim (or Tom Jobim). For those not in tune with world music, Jobim is the composer of “The Girl from Ipanema,” “Corcovado,” and many other Bossa Nova classics.

Bossa Nova

Both Keys and Bossa Nova resulted from my playing with a shallow depth of field. Once again, there was no conversion to monochrome.

Just four shots, but all so very different, and all wonderful, That photo of Willie Nelson is so characterful, and works so well in monochrome. I’ve followed up some of the links you’ve left for us, and look forward to popping back later for more. Thank you!

Thank you very much, Margaret. I had so many photos, but I didn’t want people to feel overwhelmed.

I think you’re right. Small is often beautiful. As here. But please show us more another day.

That’s a fantastic photo of Willie Nelson and I love your use of the really shallow depth of field in the piano keys and music/glasses shots too 🙂 You now have me humming ‘The Girl from Ipanema’!!

Those guitars are amazing, they couldn’t play them or do they represent something I’m missing. So the most episodes, not sure what that means. Sorry. They are great images and love the one of Willie.

The guitars are symbolic only. They represent the artists. The episodes refer to how many shows they have appeared in. Austin City Limits is a famous Public Broadcasting System TV show. It’s very popular and features artists from all genres. In the display on my photo, those are all country singers. I hope this helps. Thanks for your feedback.

I love Austin City Limits! I was able to attend a couple in my Texas years. Faith Hill was one.

I'd love hearing back from you. Let me know if you have any questions or something is not working on the site.
