A View to a Kill

Big Bend Ranch State Park

— Although not my first time exploring Big Bend Ranch SP scenery, the photo above was made during my actual first stay within park boundaries. This was back in 2009, and I spent nearly a week at the Bunkhouse near the park headquarters. It was also the first time we began learning a lot about the park’s history and its longhorn tradition. The vastness of this park is hard to describe, but I hope the photo above gives you a brief glimpse of the multiple layers of beauty to be found at the park. Covering an area of 486 square miles (1,259 square kilometers) with very rugged and isolated terrain, the park area is called El Despoblado, or “The Uninhabited.” Some of the areas are so remote that a high-clearance vehicle with all wheel drive is required.
