For this floral Friday, I’m feeling nostalgic. When I was a child, one of the big hits in Brazil in 1974 was a song called “The Flowers in Our Home Garden” (“As Flores do Jardim da Nossa Casa”), performed by the inimitable Roberto Carlos. I’ll link to a live recording from that era at the end of this post. It was a sad song talking about love lost and love found. The opening verses started by saying the flowers in our home garden were no longer blooming because love was gone. Ultimately, the hopeful message in rain showers would bring back new flowers. With that, love would flourish again. To this day, whenever I see flowers blooming in our home garden, that song comes to mind.
The Rock Rose Brazilian (Pavonia braziliensis) bush used to brighten up the front steps leading to our old home. Rock Rose Brazilian flowers are related to hibiscus but have a greater tolerance to heat and cold. They love the sun and partial shade.
Although most people won’t understand the lyrics (some of you do), here’s the video of that live performance by Roberto Carlos in 1974. Also, remember that copyright issues may block the video from playing in your country. In the beginning, Roberto Carlos talks about the sadness that caused him to write the song. The actual singing begins at 0:47 seconds in the video.
