Warner Point

Warner Point

— During our first visit to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP, we did the South Rim scenic drive and stopped at various points along the way. I am glad that we decided to do the Warner Point Nature Trail first thing early in the day. It turned out that we ended up having a hot day. Although the trail is considered moderate — mostly because of the elevation gain (406 ft / 123.75 m) — it is only 1.5 miles (2.4 km) roundtrip. To assist you in appreciating the views, there are several benches placed in shaded areas under mountain mahogany, serviceberry, pinyon pine, and juniper trees. In the photo above, right dead center, you may be able to spot a small glimpse of the Gunnison River that runs at the bottom of the canyon. To assist you along the way, there is a nature trail guide you can pick up at the visitor center or at the trail head.
