Piazza del Plebiscito

— When you visit Pompeii, chances are you’ll have some time to explore a little of Naples. Some of the sights you’ll likely see include the Real Teatro di San Carlo and the impressive Galleria Umberto I. Not far from those, you will run into the Piazza del Plebiscito. The name was given on October 2, 1860, at the time Naples was added to the Kingdom of Italy. The beautiful collonades come together in the center at the Basilica Reale Pontificia San Francesco da Paola. Fortunately, after having the piazza be used as a parking lot in the 1960s, Naples redesigned the piazza back to its original paving stones and made the area all designated for pedestrian traffic only. Occasionally, the piazza is used for large outdoor concerts.
