— Nothing can come close to describing the peace and quiet of canoeing the Rio Grande up the Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park. After several previous attempts of canoeing in the Rio Grande, we were finally able to get to do that back in April 2017. Previous attempts had failed because the river was too high or too low. This time everything fell into place. We enjoyed a whole day in the canyon. Slowly we began our journey taking advantage of every turn. Each stop provided a different experience of the beauty and serenity of this place. The Santa Elena Canyon has always been one of our favorite hikes in the park. Going farther into the canyon solidified what we had always enjoyed in that short hike. The shot above was taken at our stop for lunch. I guess that technically we were in the Mexican side of the canyon, but our outfitter did not advertise that, of course. If you want to experience Heaven’s peace on Earth, go no farther. This is the real deal!
