First Light of Fall on the Blue River

I traded our backyard deck in Texas for Silverthorne, Colorado, this week, and the mountains wasted no time making the trip worthwhile. When I opened the blinds on the morning of September 22, the light was almost surreal. The fall foliage was ablaze as the sun climbed through the trees, scattering into a tiny starburst between the branches, while the Blue River flowed peacefully below, bathed in golden light. That was the view from our bedroom window, and it set the tone for the entire day.

The Blue River runs right through the heart of Silverthorne, flowing out of the Dillon Reservoir dam just above town and winding north for roughly 65 miles (105 km) until it joins the Colorado River at Kremmling. Along the way, cottonwoods line the banks, and this week, they are putting on quite a show. Those greens, golds, and oranges are no accident. Throughout the summer, leaves constantly replenish their green chlorophyll, which masks the yellow and orange carotenoid pigments that have been there all along. As the nights grow longer, chlorophyll production slows and then stops, and the hidden gold finally comes through. According to the U.S. Forest Service, a run of warm, sunny days followed by cool, crisp nights produces the most brilliant displays, which is exactly the kind of weather we have been enjoying.

We spent most of the day doing some serious forest bathing on the Willow Creek Trail in the Eagles Nest Wilderness, part of the White River National Forest. The trail wound through groves of aspens at their peak, entire hillsides glowing in gold and orange, punctuated by the deep green spires of evergreens. With every breeze, the leaves shimmered, and the forest seemed to breathe with us. Designated in 1976, the 133,496-acre (about 54,000-hectare) wilderness protects the rugged Gore Range, a landscape the Forest Service aptly describes as “more vertical than horizontal,” with jagged peaks, deep valleys, alpine lakes, and dense forests. Its snowmelt helps feed the Colorado River, and some 180 miles (290 km) of trails lead into it from Silverthorne, Frisco, and Vail.

Late in the afternoon, we made it back to our condo just in time for the setting sun (view from the condo deck above). Dark, stormy clouds rolled in over the valley, threatening a storm that never came. Against that slate-gray sky, the last rays of sunlight lit up the treetops as if someone had flipped a switch. Fittingly, the autumnal equinox arrived at 6:05 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time that very evening, officially marking the start of fall in the Northern Hemisphere (and the start of spring back home in Brazil). Listening to the Blue River, I sat in quiet meditation and gave thanks for a wonderful first day of fall, surrounded by glorious color.
