Sunlit Serenity: A Brief Nature Retreat

Mayfield Park & Nature Preserve

While running some errands this afternoon, I made a speedy stop at a local Austin gem: Mayfield Park & Nature Preserve. Nestled in Central Austin, the park is an oasis with short trails, ponds, flowers, and several peacocks roaming freely. I was at the park for only fifteen minutes. The peacocks were nowhere to be found, but I saw several flowering plants still blooming in the warm December weather. Here are two that caught my eye.

Shrimp Plant

I have featured some macro shots of the Shrimp plant in previous posts. We have one recently planted at home. I wanted a different perspective. So, I got my camera on the ground, looking up at the flower with the blue sky as the photo’s background.

These pink roses were just too pretty to go unnoticed. With the sun backlighting their petals, the same bottom-to-top perspective created a different glow in the roses’ centers.

Roses

That was all the break I needed: a quick nature immersion in the middle of the city. I’ll probably go back for an extended visit and maybe see the peacocks around next time.

For Cee’s FOTD.

How nice to see a shrimp plant in the wild. They’re strictly a small pot plant here.

Margaret, that was a first for me. I had only seen it in pots, as we have one here at home. Thanks for writing.

That is an oasis! We have a shrimp plant in our garden. For a couple of years I kept it in a pot and its blooming was so-so. Then my husband transplanted to the garden and—wow—did it bloom! Your photos here are wonderful. The first one looks like a painting, it has so much texture. And I love how nearly transparent the rose petals are in the sun.

Thank yo so much for your feedback. It’s much appreciated, Marie. I currently have one shrimp plant in a large pot here at home. I might get one in the ground. It grows quite large.
