Sunday Shenanigans

The One That Got Away

After my usual Sunday morning meditation, I observed the wildlife outside our backyard. We are blessed with a pond that attracts a variety of wildlife. Today was especially interesting because I could see three different animals simultaneously. I’m not including the birds and humans way across the pond.

It all began when I noticed a Cooper’s Hawk flying across the pond. It landed under a large tree and stayed there a few minutes.

Cooper’s Hawk

When the hawk landed, I saw “Spiky,” the Green Heron, flying away from that location, approaching our backyard. I laughed when I noticed the punk hair sticking out of its head. Had the hawk spooked it? Green Herons are small birds approximately 16-22″ (41-56 cm) in size. Could Cooper make a meal out of Spiky? I have seen Cooper catch squirrels on two other occasions.

Things calmed down enough after Cooper flew away (first photo). Then, Spiky was able to look for brunch, but I did not see it catch anything.

Crawdad Catcher

Meanwhile, utterly oblivious to those shenanigans right in the area, there was “Crawdad Catcher,” the Yellow-Crowned Night Heron (a regular here) doing a buffet sampling.

It missed on the first attempt, but the second time around, Crawdad Catcher was successful.

Lunch Is Served!

This all happened in under forty-five minutes. When it cools down, I might spend more time on the deck to see what else I can capture.

I keep thinking how lucky you are to now live in such a beautiful location, but then remember so do I. I just (mostly) seem to stay indoors these days, unable to move beyond the chronic pain barrier.

Your heron is a very attractive bird with those head stripes. Love the video.

I only attempted a video with my camera once, but couldn’t seem to hold it still for long enough. Can you embed the camera’s video directly into WordPress? Excuse my ignorance if it’s easy to do. Do you need a paid WordPress theme to do it?

We are lucky to see these animals so close to us.

Yes, you can embed videos directly into WP. Instead of choosing to add an image, you choose to add a video. I think that is available for all users.

      Thanks for your comments.
