Lens-Artists Challenge #313 – Cool Colors
In February 2024, I had a challenge about using warm colors in our photos. I examined the impact that those hues had on the way we react to a photograph. Now, John focuses on cool colors for this week’s challenge. In his post, he writes, “Cool colors evoke calmness, serenity, and tranquility, feelings often associated with water, sky, and nature.” Cool colors include hues ranging from “violet through blue to green,” as John emphasizes from Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary definition of “cool.” Although several images in my catalog surfaced to this challenge, I decided to focus on Huntsville State Park in Texas.
Within the Sam Houston National Forest, Huntsville SP offers a splendid setting for a tranquil time. Its size covers approximately 2,083 acres of wooded terrain and features the 210-acre Lake Raven you see in the opening photo.
Hiking and biking trails offer lots of beautiful scenery to be appreciated. Of course, there are also traditional camping and screen shelters for your use. Wildlife is everywhere around the park.
Although I have been to the park in the fall and spring, it was in the latter season when my eyes witnessed unforeseen beauty. I will share some images below.
The park’s setting can be breathtaking when you drive around to appreciate the landscape. The roads are lined with lush greens. If you stop in one of several picnic areas around Lake Raven, you may even witness some of the park’s wildlife, as in the photos below. Be sure to click on the thumbnails to see full-size images.
As I indicated previously, in the spring, the park explodes in colors with a fantastic variety of wildflowers. Here are a few examples.
All of this beauty is conveniently located just 10 miles (16 km) from the college town of Huntsville. So, there are plenty of restaurants to satisfy your food cravings without having to cook at the park if you don’t want to.
Last week, Sofia guided us through the wonders of adding a sense of scale to our photos. We saw the beautiful galleries you shared. Your photos were revealing and creative. You had fun with that challenge.
This week, it is John’s turn to focus on cool colors. He provides excellent directions and terrific images to illustrate the challenge. I am looking forward to seeing your responses. Don’t forget to use the “lens-artists” hashtag when responding to it so we can easily find it in the Reader.
Anne will return with a new challenge next Saturday at noon EDT in the USA. Stay tuned. Please see this page to learn more about the Lens-Artists Challenge and its history.

Well done with cool color images. I love the park you’ve shown us. The lake and winding road image are beautiful. And your flowers accented this week’s theme.

Sylvia, many thanks for your feedback. Although it is not a very far drive at all (under 2 hours), it took me years to visit that park.

What a beautiful state park, and such lovely wildflowers too 😍
Egidio Leitao
Thanks so much, Sarah. It is really a nice park. I might have to go back again this fall.
Lindy Le Coq
Such a tranquil visit to a beautiful park, Egídio. The photo of Lake Raven is breathtaking, and the Wood Ducks are beautiful. Do you know what the three petal blue flower is? The shape looks like trillium, though I’ve never seen a blue one!
Egidio Leitao
Thank you, Lindy. That lake made me wake up early a couple of days simply to catch the sunrise (I’m not a morning person). As for the flower, it’s a Giant Spiderwort. They’re common in Louisiana and Texas. They can be white, pink, blue, purple, and violet. I have two other posts with them in my blog: https://throughbrazilianeyes.com/tag/giant-spiderwort/

How wonderful to have a park like this to visit, Egidio! Your florals are beyond stunning, but the cool, green winding road looks amazing. Your first image of the lake looks strikingly like one we have here, complete with similar reflections and colors 🙂
Egidio Leitao
Thanks, Terri. What an interesting coincidence about the lake there!
PR
Amazing colors, Egidio!
Egidio Leitao
Thanks so much, PR.

Thanks, Ann-Christine. I love when I envision something in my mind and get what I thought of in a photo. That was the case of Floating Zen.
