— A historical frontier site in west Texas, the Fort Davis National Historic Site was a key outpost guarding west Texas against the Comanches and Apaches until 1881. The fort is one of the “best remaining examples of a frontier military post in the American Southwest,” says the National Park Service.
We enjoy traveling to Fort Davis for a variety of reasons. You can visit this national historic site, the Davis Mountains State Park, the Nature Conservancy’s Davis Mountains Preserve, and the University of Texas’ McDonald Observatory. It is also close to Marfa, Texas, and other memorable west Texas places.
